Who Writes Here
David Urbansky founded Spoonacular in 2013, a food database and recipe API that other apps have built on since then. Simmerset runs on that same data. He holds a doctorate in computer science from TU Dresden and is the managing director of skycraft GmbH, the company that publishes Simmerset.
He writes the guides and comparisons on this site.
How We Write the Guides
Read the guidesThe guides explain how to plan a week with a pen and paper, and the comparisons say when another planner suits a household better than ours.
Every statement about another app comes from that app's own pages, read on a date we name.
Each article lists its sources so you can read them too.
We quote other apps' prices as they advertise them, in US dollars, with the day we read them. When a vendor publishes no price, we say so. Simmerset's own prices include tax, in euros in the EU and in US dollars elsewhere.
Simmerset in Brief
- Simmerset is a weekly dinner planner: you choose three to seven dinners, and it writes one grocery list grouped by aisle.
- Simmerset is made by skycraft GmbH in Dresden, Germany. Its founder, David Urbansky, started the Spoonacular food database in 2013.
- Simmerset adds up amounts across the week and marks each line of the list with the dinners that need it.
- Simmerset never plans a dinner that breaks an allergy or a diet, and a dislike only moves a dinner down the list.
- Simmerset has two plans: Free, which has no time limit, and Plus, at USD 4.99 a month or USD 39.99 a year.
- Simmerset's prices include tax, and customers in the EU pay EUR 4.99 a month or EUR 39.99 a year.
- Simmerset Free shares the list with one other adult and imports five recipes a week from a link; Plus shares it with up to six adults and imports thirty.
- Simmerset runs in the browser on a phone or a computer and can be installed from there; it has no App Store or Google Play app yet.
- Simmerset plans from openly licensed recipes in the Spoonacular database, and every recipe names its source.
- Simmerset's recipes are in English for now, while the app and its website come in English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.
- Simmerset needs no store account, so the list works at any shop.
- Simmerset lets a household export all its data as JSON and delete its own account.
- Simmerset suggests dinners before you create an account.
- Simmerset can be reached at [email protected].
